SIDE BY SIDE · WALL HOOK
Wall Hook – side by side Design, Sabine Meyer: oiled walnut and aluminium, h 24 × w 2.5 × d 2.5 cm, awarded by the Centre National des Arts Plastiques 2010, Steinhöringer Werkstätten.
The design problem of the wall hook is its second state: the empty hook that stays on the wall and signals nothing is currently hanging from it. Sabine Meyer’s solution is formal and functional at the same time – the aluminium hook disappears into an oiled walnut body that sits nearly flush against the wall, and unfolds to its full 24 cm when needed. The Centre National des Arts Plastiques awarded this approach in 2010: not as a trade fair success, but as inclusion in France’s national design collection. Produced in the Steinhöringer Werkstätten for people with disabilities – every hook handcrafted, every production step carried out with the precision that comes from work not being taken for granted.

Which interior aesthetic suits the walnut wall hook?
Oiled walnut has a brown-grey spectrum with natural warmth – darker than maple or cherry, warmer than wenge, more expressive in grain than oak. As a hook row against light plaster or lime-wash walls, the contrast between the dark wood and the aluminium hook reads with particular clarity. Interior partners that strengthen the walnut register: hammered brass, natural leather in warm tones, linen textiles, unfinished concrete. Both as a single object and as a row, the wall hook has the flat presence of a wall relief when folded – and disappears as a design problem entirely.
What does the Centre National des Arts Plastiques award mean?
The CNAP is attached to the French Ministry of Culture and has promoted contemporary design and fine art as a public responsibility since 1982. Awarded objects enter the national collection – the side by side wall hook stands in a European design collection alongside objects assessed by the same criteria applied to other art forms. This is not a public vote or a marketing label: it is the considered judgement of a public institution about an object’s independent contribution to design culture.
What does “handcrafted in the Steinhöringer Werkstätten” mean?
The Steinhöringer Werkstätten are part of the side by side network of eleven partner workshops for people with disabilities in Bavaria. Production steps are broken down into many individual tasks – not for efficiency, but so that as many people as possible can contribute to each object. Patrick Babel, who works in the drilling shop, puts it directly: “Making high-quality products requires concentration and precision. And yet working with wood brings me a great deal of joy.” The result is objects whose origin is invisible in the finish – only the quality shows.
Which of the five wood finishes suits which interior style?
side by side offers the wall hook in five wood finishes – all oiled, all solid wood. Maple is the lightest: a near-white, clear grain that works best with Japandi, Scandinavian and minimalist interiors. Cherry is mid-dark with a warm red tone – classic in character, best suited to traditional furniture and country-house aesthetics. Pear is also dark with a reddish warmth, distinct from cherry – pairing well with terracotta and earth-toned palettes. Walnut has the darkest and most expressive register of the five: a brown-grey spectrum that reads particularly well with industrial and warm-contemporary interiors, hammered brass, and exposed concrete. Oak sits in the middle – a light-to-medium spectrum that holds its own in almost any context.
Single hook or a row – how does the configuration change the room?
A single hook makes a point: the day wardrobe in the bedroom, the hook in the study for a jacket and headphones, the outdoor position on the balcony for coats and umbrellas. Three hooks in a row create a minimal hallway wardrobe for narrow walls – folded, they become three parallel wall reliefs in wood and aluminium that read more like a wall sculpture than a coat rail. Five hooks in a row make the complete coat storage that structures an entrance hall: extended, a conventional coat rail; folded, a flat wall installation. The choice depends on wall width and use intensity – a row of three is the natural starting configuration.
How do I care for an oiled solid wood wall hook?
Oiled wood is not a sealed material – it breathes, responds to the room’s humidity, and develops a patina over time that deepens the grain rather than obscuring it. In walnut, this patina gradually intensifies the brown-grey spectrum, making the object more interesting, not duller, with age. For cleaning, a dry or lightly damp cloth is sufficient; aggressive cleaning agents and larger quantities of water should be avoided. For intensive use, or when the surface looks dull, a thin application of natural wood oil – worked in with a soft cloth, wiped off after 15 minutes – is all that is needed. Oiled wood that responds to care is not maintenance overhead: it is what it means to own an object with a living material surface.
