SIDE BY SIDE · POT TRIVET M
Extendable from 5 to 50 cm: the pot trivet that doesn’t presume which pot is coming.
The pot trivet M by side by side Design answers the question that every fixed-size trivet leaves open: does it fit the pot currently on the hob? The M trivet doesn’t ask. Continuously adjustable from 5 to 50 cm, it covers the majority of standard pot and pan sizes – one or two at a time, depending on the situation. Folded, it lies flat in the drawer and takes up barely more space than a stack of tea strainers. The scissor-grid mechanism in oiled walnut is tool-free, steplessly adjustable, and built for daily use over many years. Design: Sabine Meyer. Handcrafted in the Wendelstein Werkstätten for people with disabilities.

How does the scissor-grid mechanism work — and why is it more durable than spring-based systems?
The M trivet consists of walnut slats connected in a scissor grid via screw joints. When extended, the slats splay evenly outward; the width adjusts continuously from 5 to 50 cm. There are no springs, no click-stops, no moving metal components – only wood and screws. This makes the mechanism maintenance-free: it works the same after ten years as on the first day, provided it is not left submerged in water.
Which pots, pans, and dishes fit — and where are the limits of the M trivet?
The M trivet offers space for one or two pots side by side. At up to 50 cm, it fits most standard kitchen formats: a large saucepan, a frying pan, a medium casserole, or a heavy braising dish. For very large formats – a full-length fish kettle, an oversized roasting pan – or for three to four pots in a row, the L trivet (up to 80 cm) is the right choice.
Why oiled walnut — and what happens to the wood over the years?
Oiled walnut is not a sealed material. It breathes, responds to humidity, and develops a patina that makes it darker and richer – the warm brown-grey spectrum deepens, the grain becomes more visible. A trivet used daily improves with time rather than wearing out. To refresh: a thin application of natural wood oil, worked in with a soft cloth and wiped off after 15 minutes.
What does “handcrafted in the Wendelstein Werkstätten” mean?
The Wendelstein Werkstätten are part of the side by side network of specialised partner workshops for people with disabilities in Bavaria. Production is broken into many individual steps – not for rationalisation, but so that as many people as possible can take part in the manufacturing process. The result: objects whose origin is invisible in the finish. Only the quality shows.
How does the M trivet differ from S and L — and for whom is M the right choice?
The S trivet (up to 30 cm) is for small individual vessels: espresso maker, milk pan, saucepan. The L (up to 80 cm) is the format for large roasting dishes and three to four pots side by side. The M is the all-round trivet in between: small enough to fit in any drawer, large enough for the biggest pot in a typical cooking repertoire. For anyone who wants to own one trivet that handles everything – M is the right choice.
How do I care for an oiled walnut trivet?
For everyday use, wiping with a dry or lightly damp cloth is sufficient; aggressive cleaning agents and larger amounts of water should be avoided. If the surface looks dull, a thin application of natural wood oil – worked in with a soft cloth and wiped off after 15 minutes – is all that is needed. Not dishwasher safe. The result is an object that improves with use – not one that degrades.
