ROWAC · STOOL
No hidden joint. No construction lie. No design trick.
The ROWAC Schemel was designed in 1909 by Karl Robert Wagner and faithfully revived in 2020 without revision — because there was nothing to revise. Cold-rolled steel, formed and riveted: every connection visible, every rivet honest, every joint repairable by any metalworker even a hundred years from now. The Blueprint Edition carries the colour of the Blaupause with which Walter Gropius planned the Bauhaus building in Dessau a hundred years ago — RAL 5002, a blue that is precise and stays precise. Made in the Erzgebirge mountain region of Saxony, within a 40-kilometre radius, with steel from Brandenburg. A sitting object that does not need its history to make the case — but has one that holds it.

What makes the riveted construction a design argument, not just a technical one?
Because rivets are a position: visible, honest, self-explaining. You can see how two pieces lie over each other and are held together. Under overload, the joint deforms before it fails — unlike a weld. Original ROWAC pieces from the 1920s are still in use today: that is not a quality promise, it is a quality proof. A counterposition to the disposable object — not as a statement, but as the logical consequence of the construction method.
What is the thinking behind the Blueprint Edition?
A blueprint is the drawing that turns an idea into something that can be built. The edition marks the centenary of the Bauhaus building in Dessau, completed by Walter Gropius in 1926 — this year, 2026, is that hundredth anniversary. The Schemel was in daily use in the workshops of the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau — as a tool for making, not a decorative object. The colour RAL 5002 carries that moment: precise, without architectural self-dramatisation.
Which other ROWAC models complement this one?
ROWAC develops the Schemel as a family: Model MI with wooden seat plate at 50 cm (table height) and 75 cm (bar height), Model MIS with steel seat plate at 48 cm and 73 cm — the steel versions are also suitable for outdoor use. Several finish options allow for a curated ensemble. Find more ROWAC products via the footer on blickfang-designshop.com.
