Hardly any other designer in Germany has made such a contribution to table culture as Tassilo von Grolman, who, as a connoisseur of good living and a passionate tea and coffee lover, lets his personal pleasure flow into his design work.

As a trained machinist, studied mechanical engineering and industrial designer, he first became known for his particularly functional designs. In his work, which ranges from product and packaging to corporate design, he always combines the formally well thought out with the functionally made. However, functionality and sensuality are not in conflict with one another in his work.

Over the last 50 years or so, he has created numerous, often internationally renowned design objects, including for Alfi, Mono, Moët, LVMH, SPRING and Twinings, the most famous of which have found a home in the design departments of museums all over the world, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

However, the designer clearly disagrees with the idea that good design belongs primarily in museums. He creates well-thought-out and well-made objects for everyday use - a conviction, an inner attitude that is deeply rooted in the Bauhaus tradition. Grolman's credo is "Simple is the hardest." His teacher at the Kassel School of Applied Arts, Professor Herbert Oestreich, was himself a student of the Bauhaus master Wilhelm Wagenfeld. He influenced von Grolman and passed on the design thinking from the Bauhaus school to him. The credo: Good design creates identity, moves people and is an expression of good taste in its style. No ostentatious excess, nothing forced, no unnecessary playfulness.

Sustainability in form and function becomes von Grolman's mission. And so it is no coincidence, but a direct result of the consistent design, that this product line no longer produces any waste from paper filters.

Because the enduring nature of time is also fundamental to pure enjoyment, Tassilo von Grolman chose the daily tea and coffee ritual to return to his design roots. With TRIBUTE TO 100 YEARS OF BAUHAUS, he has created a very personal design series that combines two apparent opposites: timeless design with formal clarity and a succinct enjoyment of absolute sensuality.

What does “good design” mean to you?
